So you guys know I’ve been slowly trying to ditch all of my conventional products and switch over to safe, natural, non-toxic alternatives. And makeup wipes…they are definitely one of them.
I use makeup remove wipes all the time to, well, remove my makeup! I love using an oil first, like this one, to break up all my makeup & then remove it all with a wipe before cleansing. Previously, I would buy my makeup remover wipes in bulk from good ‘ol Costco, the Kirkland brand specifically.
But now I make my own! They only take a few ingredients, about 5 minutes to make, and are totally non-toxic. You can also use these for so much more than just removing makeup..for example you can use them as baby wipes, to wipe your dog’s paws, or toss some in your car to have handy for messes!
What you’ll need:
1 roll of paper towels, cut in half (I like using the select-a-sheet towels since they are smaller)
1 tbsp Dr. Bronner’s Soap (I like this one)
2 tbsp Coconut oil
15 drops YL Lavender essential oil
2 cups warm (not hot!!) water
Storage container/jar
I have this jar from Target for storing my wipes. It is just the perfect size to fit the paper towels (although I do have to try & fold the roll in half before pushing them down into the jar). An airtight jar would definitely be best, but this seems to be working fine for me for now.
And a note about the essential oil – I chose lavender since it is soothing for skin (and the smell is just dreamy!) but what’s even more important than the oil you choose is the brand of oils you use. I only trust Young Living oils on my skin – most other brands (like the ones you find on Amazon or in health food stores) will likely be filled with artificial fragrances, fillers, chemical extenders, etc that I would never let anywhere near my skin. Quality is essential! You can read more about why I choose to use Young Living exclusively here, and if you want YL oils of your own you can do that here!
How to make ’em:
- Start by cutting your paper towel roll in half. I suggest using a non-serrated knife, otherwise you’ll get towel fragments/dust everywhere!
- Fold (or at least attempt to lol) the 1/2 roll in half, so that you can fit it into the jar. If the mouth of your jar/container is big enough, you won’t have to do this. Then shove the 1/2 paper towel roll down into the jar.
- Measure out 2 cups of warm water. Add Dr. Bronner’s soap, coconut oil, and lavender essential oil. Stir to combine.
- Slowly pour the mixture all over the top of the paper towels, and let soak through. Gently remove the cardboard tube, and from the center pull out the first wipe!
It may seem at first like there isn’t enough liquid, but trust me it will eventually distribute and the all natural, oily goodness will be soaked into every fiber of each towel 🙂
And that’s it! Seriously so easy, and once you have the supplies it will take you no time to whip up a batch of these every now and again. Not to mention, they are cheap!! I will say they are a tad bit drier than what I’m used to for makeup remover wipes, but it doesn’t bother me. As I said, I always use an oil first to start removing my makeup, and then use the wipe to just remove all of the excess, and they work wonders. Also..once my current batch of wipes run out, I will be filming the process & will create a quick video tutorial on how to make them on my YouTube channel. So stay tuned for that!
Let me know if you guys try them out! Such a fun, easy, and useful DIY!!
