So I recently ‘flipped’ our coffee table from a sleek, modern, black IKEA model to a more rustic, warm version.
We actually received the coffee table as a hand-me-down when we moved in about 2 years ago, and I was so grateful for it because furniture can be crazy expensive!! But I also knew that the sleek, black look did not match my home vibe or style. So I finally got around to this little project and I absolutely love the way it turned out. It fits perfectly into our family room & really brings the whole room together!
I documented the whole transformation (which was super easy btw, don’t be intimidated!) in this video, so I won’t elaborate too much here. But it was definitely a straightforward project that would be great for any DIY beginner (which I still consider myself to be).
What you’ll need for this project:
IKEA HEMNES Coffee Table (mine was black, so I painted it with white chalk paint that I made. But you can obviously do this to a white table & skip that step)
6 – 6ftx5 1/2 in Pine boards (got mine from Lowes)
220 grit sandpaper
Miniwax stain ‘Provincial’
Clear Wood Finish
#8 1 1/4 inch wood screws (got mine from Lowes)
DIY Chalk Paint Recipe! (I used 12tbsp CC powder for every 3 cups paint)
What You’ll Need:
Flat, matte paint (I used ‘Alabaster‘ from Sherwin Williams for this project)
Empty Paint Quart
How to Make It:
- Mix 12tbsp calcium carbonate w/ just enough water to form a paste.
- Add 3 cups matte paint to empty paint quart
- Add in calcium carbonate paste, and mix vigorously.
