Join me on a typical day in the life with essential oils including diffusing and topical use; everything from supporting my mood and energy levels to supporting my immune system and balanced hormones.
Hey friends!
Those of you who are not “oily” aka into using essential oils, may be wondering what us oily folk actually do with all of those colorful bottles. I will tell you, before I started using oils for myself, I really just thought they were used to make your house smell nice in place of candles. I had no idea how versatile they are and how powerful they can be when it comes to supporting the body – physically and mentally! Needless to say, I’ve learned a lot, and now we use these little plant extracts all throughout our day in many ways. To get a glimpse into a day in the life with essential oils, read on!
// DIFFUSING
I diffuse pretty much all day long. For energy, for focus, for a mood boost, for sleep..our diffusers are always hard at work in our house. And beyond all of the oil aromas they release into the air, there is something just so relaxing and grounding about a diffuser puffing..it adds just a little layer of calm into my everyday which I welcome with open arms. When it comes to which oils to diffuse, this honestly changes day to day based on how I’m feeling! But here are some of my favorite blends:
- Energy: lemon + peppermint or en-r-gee + grapefruit
- Focus: valor + awaken
- Clean: thieves + lemon + purification or Thieves + Lime
- Calm: peace & calming blend
- Sleep: lavender + cedarwood + dream catcher
// APPLYING
I apply oils allll throughout the day! They help support my energy levels, help me focus, give me a mood boost, help me feel calm or handle stress…there’s just something about wearing oils. You just feel good. If you know, you know! Some oils do require dilution. What’s super convenient is every YL oil bottle has specific instructions, for example “dilute 1 drop with 1 drop carrier oil” or “apply directly to desired area.” This makes it super easy!! For diluting, I typically just use fractionated coconut oil. And if there are oils I love to apply often that require diluting, I will make a roller. I have many favorites I like to wear during the day, but here’s a quick list:
- Valor
- Joy
- Stress Away
- Geneyus
- Magnify Your Purpose
- Into the Future
- Sacred Mountain
- Idaho Blue Spruce
- Motivation
- Highest Potential
- Abundance
- White Angelica
- Gratitude
I also apply a few different oils before I got o bed each night. During the day, I focus more on applying oils that make me feel good as I’m going about my day. Before bed, those are more my “system support” oils that are for more targeted reasons, like immune or hormone support. I also sometimes apply some blends that help me wind down and relax at night.
- Immune support roller: Thieves + Oregano on feet and spine
- Progessence Plus on forearms (hormone support)
- Sclaressence on lower abdomen (hormone support)
- Endoflex over my thyroid (thryoid support)
- Valor (calming/relaxing)
- Surrender (calming/relaxing)
- White Angelica (calming/relaxing)
- Tranquil roll-on (calming/relaxing)
// HAYDEN
I use oils on my daughter, as well! They can be really amazing to help support kiddos’ bodies, emotions, etc. as long as you do so safely! It’s really important to dilute essential oils appropriately if they’re going to be used on kids, since their bodies are smaller. Here are the guidelines I follow:
- Ages 0-1: 1 drop EO to 8-10 drops carrier oil
- Ages 2-6: 1 drop EO to 3 drops carrier oil
- Ages 7-11: 1 drop EO to 1 drop carrier oil
- Age 12+: full labeled concentration
For Hayden, I love using rollers on her. I typically roll them on the bottoms of her feet + down her spine. We have a few different rollers that we use for her each day:
- Immune roller: good ‘ol Thieves diluted down
- Happy Baby roller: Lavender, Frankincense, + Gentle Baby
- Tantrum Tamer: Stress Away + White Angelica
I also love diffusing in her room at night for sleep! I use less drops than I would in our diffuser, usually just 3 or 4 drops total. We love Lavender, Sleepyize, or the Seedlings Calm blend in her diffuser. Sniffleease is another staple for her during the colder months if she’s a little sniffly – just 1 drop with her sleepy oil helps her breathe easy through the night.
// SKINCARE
I actually use a lot of oils in my skincare now so I wanted to include a section on this. Before I got into oils, I always used to be slightly horrified when people would share they use oils on their skin – because in my brain fragrance on skin = BAD. But then I learned that true essential oils are not “fragrance” (which is a manmade soup of chemicals that don’t have to be disclosed to the consumer) and actually can have really amazing benefits for skin. And now that I’ve been using them for a while I can tell you, my skin has never been better!! It’s so even, less redness, more hydrated, and so much more glowy. And I was a total skincare junkie before with a practically 10 step system that I never skimped out on, so I really am very impressed. Here’s some of my favorites for skin support:
- Frankincense: we like to refer to this as the “fountain of youth” oil! It is amazing for supporting an even complexion and helping you achieve that GLOW. I like to mix a drop or two with a little bit of my nighttime moisturizer before applying all over my face + neck.
- DIY face wash: this was the very first product I switched out. I has always used a fragrance free, dermatologist recommended, super gentle face wash before (turns out it was 10/10 for toxicity!) so I thought I was doing great. Within just a couple days of ditching that and using my handmade one, most of the redness on my cheeks I had been battling for years totally disappeared!
- DIY serum: I make my own face serum, and I am obsessed!! Makes your skin so glowy and I love that I can play around and craft my own with whatever oils I’m feeling at the moment. Plus it’s so much more affordable since you can make it over and over again.
- DIY lash + brow serum: Not technically skin care…but I had to mention it because it’s a game changer. I used to use very expensive lash serums (with questionable ingredients) but honestly this homemade one works just as well!! I’m obsessed.
A little disclaimer: quality of essential oils is SO important, especially if you’re going to use them as readily as I do. The oils that I use are from Young Living and they are the oils I trust the most versus all of the other brands out there – you can read this post for all the details on that.
One last thing – one of my most asked questions is can you safely use essential oils while pregnant? I actually used lots of oils while I was pregnant with Hayden and they were a lifesaver. Pregnancy is kind of tough because many over the counter options are off limits..so you are kind of left to just meddle through the discomforts. But essential oils (when used safely + appropriately) can help ease some of those discomforts and support your body to feel it’s best, they really are so handy! I always recommend this book – it’s basically the bible for using YL oils during pregnancy, birth, and on babies! If you are expecting, I highly recommend picking up a copy!
I hope you enjoyed getting a peek into a day in the life with essential oils. If you haven’t gotten into oils yet, but want to dip your toes into this world – come join us!! You can read about how to get started on this post.
