I get SO many questions about my hair – how I style it, what products I use, how I get it colored, etc!
If you guys have been following me for the past few months, you know that I’ve been on a major journey to clear out a lot of the products I’ve been using for safer, more natural alternatives. Ever since I download the Think Dirty app (if you haven’t gotten it yet…omg download it right now. Knowledge is power!) I have been on a mission to slowly detoxify my life – hair products included!
So let’s talk about my hair care routine, shall we? But first – a little about my hair type. I have super thick hair, and I have a LOT of it. I’ve never been to a salon in my life where the girl or guy washing my hair doesn’t say ‘wow, you have a LOT of hair.’ Lol. It’s that kind of situation. It’s also very wavy, and also even kinda crimpy in some sections/layers.
As far as color – my girl Alyssa (@hairbyalyssagallen on insta) works her magic about every 4 months, and I get blonde balayage. Sometimes we just add in blonde, other times we add blonde & also some darker lowlights mixed in to break up existing blonde, but you can see the typical process she does in this video here. (This is at her old salon – she now works at Bobby Mack & Co. in Philly, if you want her to work her magic for you!)
Okay! So onto the hair care products. I like to keep it pretty simple & low maintenance, here is everything I currently use:
- Shampoo & Conditioner
- The ones I have been using for the last several months are from Acure Organics. The actual ones I use can be found here and here. For shampoo, I actually use both the moisturizing & the clarifying – I always rinse & repeat so I will use both each time I shower. The reason I do this is because I found my hair was getting a lot of build up (I guess because it’s a more natural shampoo?) and was looking a little greasy even when it was clean. But once I introduced the clarifying shampoo, problem solved! I also love the conditioner too – very moisturizing, easy to comb through my hair in the shower, and it gets the job done. I wash my hair with these about 2x per week, and I always let it air dry.
- Mermaid Spray
- So this is something I make myself – an oily DIY! I am going to post the ‘recipe’ here on the blog asap, but basically it’s a mix of a few different YL essential oils (you can learn more about those here, if you’re unfamiliar) and water, and I spray it all over my wet hair after I get out of the shower. The oils in this spray are amazing for supporting hair growth, and who doesn’t want long, healthy hair? Some of the before & afters in our FB groups are crazy (men too!!)
- Leave-in Conditioner
- The one I have been using is from Innersense Organic Beauty and can be found here. I actually stumbled across this brand while on the Think Dirty app (from the ‘Our Picks’ section specifically) and I am obsessed with this leave-in! It’s the perfect fine mist so I can easily spritz it all over my wet hair, but it is SO moisturizing! I currently have a travel size but will for sure be purchasing the full. And it’s rated a 0, heyooo!
- Young Living’s Mirah Shave Oil
- Yes, shave oil! Lol. That’s one of my favorite parts about Young Living, their products are SO versatile. So yes, this is technically a shave oil (and I use it for that too!) but I use it on my dry hair before heat styling. I’ll pump a little into my hand, rub my hands together, and then I’ll work it onto my ends. It makes them so silk & shiny, which I love! You can check it out here.
As far as dry shampoo, I used to be a big Batiste girl. But now that I’m trying to phase out artificial fragrances from my life (I’d rather not have hormone disrupting stuff on my skin/hair if I don’t have to) I’ve stopped using it. Lately – if my hair needs a little help, I’ll just put some corn starch on a makeup brush and dust that onto my scalp, part, etc. Not the most glamorous lol but it does get the job done. BUT – I do plan on making my own dry shampoo soon (it’s so easy to make yourself) and everyone in my oily FB groups raves about it, so stay tuned for that!
And as far as styling, I get lots of questions about which curling iron and/or wand I use. And I actually use both! The wand I use can be found here, and this is my go-to if I want loose, beachy, messy waves. I’ve actually done a tutorial on how I curl my hair w/ a wand, you can watch here! But as of more recently, I’ve been using a classic clip curling iron to style my hair (one I use can be found here, I have the 1″) and I LOVE the way the curls turn out. They are definitely bigger, bouncier, and more glam (as seen in the pictures on this post) versus the beachy look that I typically go for. If you guys want to see a tutorial on how I curl my hair w/ a curling iron – let me know!
So there you have it! Everything there is to know about my hair & current routine 🙂
